Common name - Sawtooth Stag Beetle
Scientific name - Prosopocoilus dissimilis dissimilis
The listing is for 1x adult beetle, of a RARE species of stag beetle which obtained its common name from the many saw-like teeth on the inside of its mandibles.
This is a rare species found only within a small group of islands off the cost of Southern Japan. While closely related to the more commonly available mainland Prosopocoilus inclinatus, this species grows much larger in size, has more aggressively curved mandibles, and is jet black in colour.
Like many members of the rhino & stag beetle families, males sport impressive horns used in wrestling matches with rivals, whereas females are hornless.
These are CAPTIVE BRED in my collection, with this stock originating from the Amami Isands off the South Coast of Japan.
This species is ideal for beginners as it is a very fast growing species and are very tolerant of adverse conditions/mistakes.
The adult beetles feed on a variety of fruits such as banana, apple, pear, peach and watermelon. The larvae feed on decaying wood.
