Common name - Obsidian Stag Beetle
Scientific name - Mesotopus tarandus
The listing is for 1x beetle larva, of a RARE species of stag beetle which is the largest stag beetle species in Africa. This species is infamous for their unique black, mirrored body colour which is does not exist in any other insect species.
These are CAPTIVE BRED in my collection, with this stock originating from Congo in Africa.
Like many members of the rhino/stag beetle families, the males of this species possess large horns/mandibles used in wrestling matches with rival males, while females lack these structures. The adult beetles feed on a variety of fruits such as banana, apple, pear, peach and watermelon. The larvae feed on decaying wood that has been colonised by the turkeytail mushroom.
