Common name - Japanese Stag Beetle "China"
Scientific name - Dorcus hopei hopei
The listing is for 1x adult beetle, of a stag beetle species popularly kept as pets in Japan due to their incredibly docile nature, making them suitable for kids to handle. This species was named in honour of British entomologist, Frederick William Hope (1797 - 1862).
This is a different, rarely-kept subspecies of the normally available Japanese Stag Beetle. The regular Japanese Stag Beetle subspecies is D. hopei binodulosus from Japan, whereas this subspecies is D. hopei hopei from China. This Chinese subspecies tends to grow thicker mandibles in comparison.
These are CAPTIVE BRED in my collection, with this stock originating from China, Asia
The adult beetles feed on a variety of fruits such as banana, apple, pear, peach and watermelon. The larvae feed on decaying wood.
